October Program Meeting by Elizabeth Walton-Potter from Salem. We have all visited graveyards at one time or another in our search for details about our family’s histories. Earlier this year Willamette Valley Genealogical Society had a great speaker on this topic and we thank them for bringing her to our attention.
WVGS has this to say about our speaker for October: “Elizabeth Walton-Potter, who is a native Oregonian and charter member of the Friends of Pioneer Cemetery, offers different aspects of visiting a graveyard that we often overlook in our quest for valuable information”
Such items as the art of carving these memorial stones, what they say about the individual, the grandeur (or lack thereof) of the monuments, changing styles of gravestones through the years, the family’s placement in the burial ground, and the meaning of symbols on the tombstones.
Elizabeth’s focus is on the Salem Pioneer Cemetery, but this discussion could be had on any pioneer cemetery. Be sure to come and listen for more clues.
