Members of the Linn Genealogical Society have been transcribing, clipping, and indexing obituaries and death notices from the Albany Democrat-Herald and other newspapers since the late 1970s. To date, there are 35 volumes of transcribed obituaries or obituary clippings available at the Linn Genealogical Society Library. The consolidated index for volumes 1 through 36 (volume 2 is not a LGS project and Vol.6 & 8 indexes are not yet available) is available using the links below. The index to the collection is ordered by surname and lists the names as they appear in the obituary. The date or year following the name is date when the obituary or death notice was published. The date could also be the date of death. The abbrievation after the date is the source of the obituary using the following key:
The number (vv:ppp) following the name indicates the volume and page number of the obituary transcription or clipping in the LSG Obituary Series. The number before the colon (:) indicates the volume number, and the numbers after the colon indicate the page numbers. The year indicates when the obituary was published. The index has 31,803 entries for 9643 surnames with more being added as earlier volumes are added to the index. The index is ordered by surname and is divided into pages according to the first initial of the surname; one page for each letter of the alphabet.
Refer to the following list to determine the year that each volume contains:
The index lists the names as they appear in the individual's obituary. Look for a married person by her married name (maiden names are shown in parenthesis where available). Check all spelling variations of a name; for example, there may be an obituary for "Bryan" and the same person listed under "Bryant." There may be more than one entry for a person, because an obituary appeared more than once in the newspaper.
