Library Volunteers

A special thank you to all library volunteers! The library is staffed solely by volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and increase your knowledge of genealogy and history by helping others. Our voluteers often use the opportunity to do their own research. Volunteer a couple of hours a week at the library by contacting Linda Ellsworth.

The Linn Genealogical Society maintains and staffs the LGS Library. There are over 1,240 historical and genealogical holdings in the Library. It is staffed by volunteers and is open to the general public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday (except holidays). The Library is located in Room 007 of the Linn County Courthouse.

To find the library, enter the Courthouse at the West entrance that faces Ferry St. After you go in the entrance, you can go down the stairs to the basement or go through the second door and use the elevator. Whether you use the stairs or the elevator, you can follow the signs directing you to the LGS Library.

The Linn Genealogical Society moved its library from the Albany Public Library in June 2001 to the Linn County Courthouse. At the time of the move, our collection consisted of some 1,200 items, mainly books and periodicals with some CDs. Since then, we have added over 700 items, mainly books, some newsletters and a few CDs. Our largest section is our collection of material regarding Linn County. We also have a lot of material on surrounding counties: Marion, Benton, and Lane.

Computers & Genealogy

Our library has three computers to use in genealogical research. We collaborated with the Albany Public Library in bringing access to Heritage Quest Online to our library and all of our members, as well as Albany Public Library patrons. Heritage Quest Online has census images and a large collection of books which supplement our collection. The Society also has a subscription to Ancestry.com for your use on one of the computers.

Linn County Genealogies

We also have file cabinets which hold the source materials for the 40-volume series Linn County, Oregon Pioneer Settlers Donation Land Claims to 1855. This unique series of books, compiled and written over a period of 25 years by Richard Milligan and John Miles, contains information on each of the 1,130 Donation Land Claims granted in Linn County, along with detailed genealogies of the claimants and their descendants. plus additional materials on later families.

Here is another view of our library showing the study carrells, periodical rack and CD collection available to our patrons and visitors.

Visit us soon and often!
